OTTAWA - The Conservatives have stepped in it with an ad on their website showing an animated bird pooping on Liberal Leader Stephane Dion's shoulder. Prime Minister Stephen Harper was forced to apologize Tuesday after the ad caused a stink on Day 3 of the federal election campaign. Harper acknowledged the ad was "tasteless and inappropriate" and said it had been changed. But the controversy overshadowed his first major campaign announcement - a promise to cut diesel taxes by two cents a litre. In the ad, a puffin is flying by as an announcer says Dion is not a leader and not worth the risk. The offending fly-by deposit was later edited out, but not before it was aired on national TV networks.
Dion said the ad says more about Harper than it says about him. He added that most Conservative voters will disagree with the ad and it could change their vote. Harper's spokesman blamed the ad on the work of an "eager web designer," saying it was removed as soon as senior campaign staff learned about it.
The puffin was a reference to Liberal deputy leader Michael Ignatieff, who once championed the seabird as a symbol of the party. Inspired by a whale-watching tour in Newfoundland last year, Dion's former leadership rival extolled the virtues of the "noble" creature - including hiding its excrement.

Wow...not even a week into the race and the mudslinging begins. I challenge the parties to outlaw mudslinging and derogative behavior during campagning. I would vote for that party.
At least Dion has stood up for Elizabeth May's right to participate in the debates
He goes up in my estimation
unlike the leader oof the Reform Party and the NDP joker!
