An international activist group is targeting Conservatives MPs in an ad campaign to stop the party from forming a majority government after the federal election. Avaaz.org is an online community with the tagline “The World In Action” that promotes activism on issues like climate change, poverty, human rights and global conflicts. Avaaz means “voice” in Hindi, Urdu and many Middle Eastern and eastern European languages. It launched its first batch of Canadian election ads criticizing Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s record on climate change last week, although they’ve yet to run in print, television or online. The ads target three Conservative MPs including environment minister John Baird, Peter MacKay and Randy Kamp – the incumbent MP in Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge-Mission. The ads urge voters to casts their ballot for the Green Party’s Elizabeth May against MacKay in Nova Scotia; Liberal David Pratt in Baird’s riding of Ottawa and NDP candidate Mike Bocking to defeat Kamp.
