B.C. wind projects on the go

The Dokie Wind Project outside Chetwynd, B.C.'s first commercial wind farm, will be able to power 33,000 homes when completed in 2009. - Commercial wind farms are under construction at Bear Mountain in Dawson Creek and Mount Hays on Kaien Island, near Prince Rupert. - Small wind turbines equipped with solar panels and LED lighting have been erected at Garry Point Park in Steveston and on the roof of B.C. Children's Hospital in Vancouver. Another will be installed at Vancouver airport by Nov. 15. A recent B.C. Hydro report said B.C. has the potential to generate more than 5,000 megawatts from wind. Just 1,600 MW would create 3,000 jobs and generate close to $4 billion in revenue. - Currently 73 licences, approvals or permits are required by 23 regulatory agencies for wind-farm planning and development in B.C.
