Debate Should Be Encouraged- Not Punished

Starlee Speers-Vernon 105.7 Sun FM

A Vernon councillor says if receiving grants from the Provincial government involves licking boots, there's something wrong with the system. Barry Beardsell says politicians shouldn't take themselves so seriously that they take personal offense to his comments, like referring to former Community Services Minister Ida Chong as "Lady Ida." "I'm not a politician but those who have those sensibilities should not be in politics." Councillor Buffy Baumbrough says city representatives learned at this year's UBCM that the Provincial government was reluctant to work with Vernon, because it seemed like we were bashing them all the time. Beardsell says the city has been missing out on funding long before he's made any criticisms of the Provincial government and points to the example of the city not receiving funding to buy the Commonage land years ago.
