Running red lights is an epidemic in Kelowna. The city is one of the worst in the province for the traffic infraction despite the presence of red light cameras at many intersections. A pair of 15-day monitoring sessions in August and September revealed 180 cases of people running red lights at just one bad intersection alone. Kelowna motorists are also among the worst in BC for wearing seat belts according to integrated traffic enforcement check stats. Use of red light cameras at intersections in BC has reduced the possibility of crashes at those locations by 14% according to ICBC stats. Kelowna RCMP note that red light camera use will continue with hopes they may be expanded to more intersections in the future.
