TERRACE – A community meeting place in George Little Park can proceed thanks to $300,000 from the B.C. Spirit Squares program, Colin Hansen, Minister of Finance and Minister responsible for the Olympic Secretariat, announced on behalf of Community Development Minister Blair Lekstrom. “This year Terrace is celebrating its 80th anniversary, a great reason to plan for a Spirit Square offering considerable opportunity for celebration in the heart of the community,” said Hansen. “The B.C. Spirit Squares program is about supporting walkable, livable, healthier places to live and this project will definitely resonate with residents and visitors alike.” The project will include a gateway feature, enhanced bandshell, and celebration plaza space, with seating, landscaping, lighting, and a green design approach. Better accessibility is a big benefit since the project location is close to transit, bike and walkways, and adjacent to the community’s sportplex, arena, aquatic centre, library and playground. The meeting place will present a considerable advantage as Terrace gets ready to host the 2010 BC Winter Games. “Being able to partner on big projects makes key infrastructure improvements possible sooner than we would otherwise be able to manage,” said Terrace Mayor Jack Talstra. “These improvements support our overall vision for making the downtown area more livable, accessible and safer for people of all ages and abilities to be able to enjoy.” The $20-million B.C. Spirit Squares program is helping to create or improve outdoor public meeting/celebration spaces, helping communities celebrate events, like BC150, the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Crown Colony of British Columbia.
