Big Foot

Betty Selin - Vernon 105.7 SUN FM

Less than a month after the glass plant closure in Lavington and the loss of 300 jobs, more North Okanagan workers say they're out of work. Workers at Big Foot Industries in the Spallumcheen Industrial Park, who were laid off in the summer for 12 weeks, worried they would not have a job to go back to, and now they say that's happened. The RV Manufacturer laid off the remainder of it's staff yesterday. At one point the company employed 200 people.

Bigfoot lays off staff 107.5 KISSFM Pete McIntyre:

It's another blow for the North Okanagan economy. Bigfoot Industries, which makes recreational vehicles and campers in the Spallumcheen Industrial Park, laid off it's staff Tuesday, and according to some employees, announced it was closing. The company has not returned calls for comment, but back in June, it laid off a third of its 200 workers due to lower demand for it's RV's which are primarily sold in the U-S. Spallumcheen mayor Will Hansma says it's a big loss. "It's unfortunate. There's an awful lot of people who work there and they're one of the big players in our industrial park. They own several pieces of property and it's going to have an impact, not just on the residents of Spallumcheen but other people in the North Okanagan."Just last month, 300 jobs were lost when Owens Illinois closed its glass making plant in Lavington.
