The competition to land a major sports event for Greater Vernon has been launched. On Wednesday, the North Okanagan Regional District board endorsed a proposal from the Greater Vernon Advisory Committee to bid for the 2012 or 2014 B.C. Winter Games. “It would be a great thing for the community,” said Gary Corner, director. “The Games would generate a lot of excitement in the community and it supports the economy by bringing people into the area.” At least 2,650 participants would attend, and they would also bring family members. The potential economic impact could range from $1.7 to $2.2 million. But hosting the Games comes at a price for local taxpayers. If the community becomes a successful host, GVAC would commit an expenditure of $45,000 in cash and $50,000 of in-kind services. But Corner believes residents should see the Winter Games as an investment. “There are lots of times where tax dollars are spent to benefit the community and this is one of them,” he said. One potential outcome from the Games could be upgraded sports and recreational facilities in Greater Vernon. “There is always a legacy from these events,” said Corner. As part of the bid process, GVAC will now contact sports groups to ensure they will be involved in organizing the Games, while the Vernon School District will also be approached for use of facilities such as buses and schools. The last time Greater Vernon hosted the Winter Games was in 1992.
