A Vernon surgeon who says he was recruited to move to Vernon to practice thoracic surgery has won his breach of contract case against Vernon Jubilee Hospital and Interior Health. BC Supreme Court documents show Dr. Zarin Khan was recruited to move from Ontario to Vernon, but Interior Health didn't tell him there were plans to centralize the program to Kelowna. In court documents, Khan says he accepted a 'work to retirement' promise and was treated callously by Interior Health. He says he had to spend the final years of his career "scrambled" to the far corners of Alberta doing temporary locums to earn a living. Mr. Justice Groves awarded 243-thousand - 500 hundred dollars for loss of income, but no punitive damages. The Judged ruled IH will also have to pay his court costs because they didn't try to settle.Karen Cairns, with Interior Health, says they have not decided yet if they will appeal.
