Rallies set for Vernon

107.5 KISSFM Pete McIntryre:

The possible change in the federal government has led to rallies being organized across the country, including two in Vernon. People against the coalition government are asked to attend an event Saturday at noon on the steps of the Vernon courthouse. Ken Clancy, the president of the Okanagan Shuswap Conservative Association is organizing it. "It's going to be a rally. We're going to have people there, hopefully with a lot of signs just to show their concern about this process, and the fact the Liberals, NDP and Bloc have absolutely no democratic mandate to proceed with this coalition." Clancy says the event will be non-partisan as the issue goes beyond party lines. "I had a phone call from a gentleman who hasn't really been involved in politics and isn't a member of the Conservative party. He feels he'll be able to get 25 to 50 people to come to a rally like this because he and his friends are so upset with this power grab by the opposition."

Meantime supporters of the coalition will rally at Cenotaph Park in Vernon at 12:30 Thursday. Green party candidate Huguette Allen is backing the takeover but has mixed feelings about the plan. "Although the millions of Canadians who voted Green in the last election will not be represented in this coalition government, but we do have some hope we can advance Green policies better than we've been able to do with the Harper government." The local Liberal and New Democrat candidates (Janna Francis and Alice Brown) are organizing Thursday's rally.
