Politicians continue to hammer away at developing a 2009 budget for the City of Vernon. A third special committee of the whole meeting will be held by council Wednesday to deal specifically with the budget process. “That should bring us to the point where we are crunching the numbers,” said Coun. Bob Spiers. During the last two sessions, city staff have presented various departmental budgets and items they would like included this year. Spiers says the next step will be for council to look at each individual request and determine if they make the cut. “Hopefully the process will come to a conclusion at the end of the month,” said Spiers.
While city staff have recommended a 2.5 per cent residential property tax increase this year, a final number has not been determined yet by council. “I’m optimistic that we can have a very equitable solution. I’m still hoping for no tax increase,” said Spiers. The committee of the whole meeting Wednesday runs from 9 a.m. to noon at city hall, and it will include an opportunity for residents to provide input to the council on the budget.
