Liberals are expected to turn out in large numbers to select their candidate for May’s provincial election. It’s anticipated that about 900 party members will vote at the Vernon-Monashee nomination meeting This Friday from 2 to 8:30 p.m. at the Schubert Centre. “There will be a pretty good turnout,” said Brett Kirkpatrick, constituency association president. Seeking the nomination are Lumby Mayor Eric Foster, Vernon businesswoman Deb Leroux, Vernon businessman Andrew Powell, broadcaster Betty Selin and Coldstream businessman Michael Tindall.
The race became necessary after MLA Tom Christensen announced he would retire from politics after the election. Kirkpatrick has been impressed with how the process has unfolded. “It’s been hotly contested and the candidates are calling the members and trying to get them on board,” he said. The candidate will be selected using a preferred ballot, in which members rank their choices in order of preference. “People will come in and vote and then we will count the ballots,” said Kirkpatrick. There will be no speeches from the candidates during the nomination process.
