'No frills' budget approved

Rachael Kimola - Feb 24, 2009 CASTANET:

It’s a no-frills budget which covers the essentials. Vernon Mayor, Wayne Lippert, says he is pleased with the budget put together by City Council which was approved to go through to the next stage Monday. “There is a general tax increase of 1.99%, which works out to less than $20 per average household. I’m pleased we were able to keep it under the $20 mark,” says Lippert. He says council worked hard during budget deliberations. “We aren’t over spending, but the budget does look after our infrastructure. It recognizes the difficult economic times. There was a lot of good input from citizens on this budget, more so than any previous budget I have personally ever worked on. From everything I‘ve heard so far, this budget should be fairly well received by the public.” Lippert says the budget bylaw was approved to go through to the public hearing process. The final adoption of the budget will take place March 9.
