Council asked for the public’s opinion for ideas on how they could make efficiencies and save after the first draft of the budget was made public on Jan. 5. Submissions from the public for direction on the budget were accepted by via mail, e-mail and written submissions to the City of Penticton’s website. City staff then took those submissions and categorized them into immediate action, political action required, further review required or no action recommended.
City treasurer Doug Leahy told council that a total of 203 suggestions from staff were received and are still being reviewed to ascertain if they can be implemented or need further analysis before implementing.
A total of 225 suggestions were from the public and will be reviewed to see if efficiencies can be gained or monies can be saved. A total of 44 general comments were received that provided insight into the service levels that the citizens of Penticton felt should be supported or issues that needed further vetting before a final decision is made.
Leahy said it is the intent to provide council with an up-to-date listing to the public consultation process at the Tuesday and Wednesday budget meetings. He said that he hopes it will wrap up this week but if not, more dates will be added.
The budget meeting tonight is open to the public and begins at 6 p.m. at City Hall.
