Vehicles checked for safety

CASTANET:
A partnership between RCMP traffic detachments has resulted in a few unsafe vehicles being pulled from the road. The RCMP North Okanagan Traffic Services set up a vehicle check at the Vernon weigh scales on Highway 97 on Thursday and Friday with the help of the Integrated Road Safety Unit and Traffic Services members from other detachments. Constable Steve Ouston says these checks were performed in partnership with the Provincial motor vehicle inspectors, Provincial WORK SAFE BC inspectors and a Transport Canada Dangerous Goods inspector. “The purpose of these check stops was to enforce driving laws and to perform mechanical inspections on commercial and private motor vehicles in order to ensure that the vehicles traveling on our roadways are mechanically safe,” says Ouston.

He says the check stops resulted in the following RCMP enforcement numbers:
Total number of commercial vehicle checks / inspections = 426
Total number of private vehicle checks / inspections = 405
Total number of commercial vehicle charges = 41
Total number of commercial vehicle notice and orders = 98
Total number of commercial vehicles placed out of service = 10
Total number of private vehicle charges = 37
Total number of private vehicle notice and orders = 67
Total number of private vehicles placed out of service = 2
Total number of private vehicle operators charged with impaired driving = 1
