$2M FOR SPALLUMCHEEN ROAD IMPROVEMENTS

SPALLUMCHEEN – Residents of Spallumcheen will benefit from joint federal-provincial funding of almost $2 million to improve Otter Lake Cross Road, Okanagan-Shuswap MP Colin Mayes and Shuswap MLA George Abbott announced today. This project is just one example of the commitment of both governments to strengthening the British Columbia economy by reducing red tape, creating jobs and getting shovels in the ground sooner. “In these challenging economic times, the governments of Canada and British Columbia are working together to create jobs and build stronger and brighter futures for British Columbia communities,” said Mayes. “We have taken steps to get shovels in the ground and create jobs in the 2009 and 2010 construction seasons.” “The improvements to Otter Creek Cross Road will ensure safety on Spallumcheen’s central road,” said Abbott. “It is great to see the governments working together to promote resident safety and security, as well as the sustainability of our important transportation routes.” Otter Lake Cross Road is the township’s main local road, used by business, industrial and residential traffic. A 2.3-kilometre length of Otter Lake Cross Road will be reconstructed, including road-widening in some areas, and the addition of sidewalks in residential areas to improve pedestrian safety. This project will improve transportation efficiency and enhance access to local facilities and services. It is expected to create 28 jobs at a time when the need for economic stimulus is greatest. The governments of Canada and British Columbia will each invest up to $961,930 in the project. The Township of Spallumcheen will contribute the balance of the remaining project costs.
