There‘s an up-and-down aspect to parking fee changes at Kelowna Airport. The daily rate for long-term parking will rise from $5 to $8, under a proposal to be considered Monday by city council. However, people who park in the short-term lot for less than 15 minutes will not be charged anything. “The 15-minute free parking is targeted at reducing the curbside idling for passenger drop-off/pick-up,” reads part of a report to council by airport operations director Dave Fuller. “The airport will promote the use of the free 15-minute parking to encourage ’cell call pick-up‘ from an arriving passenger,” Fuller says. Even with an increase in the long-term daily rate to $8, the fee remains below that charged at comparably-sized airports, Fuller says. For example, the daily long-term rate is $15 in Victoria, $9 in Saskatoon, $10 in St. John‘s and $12 in Quebec City. The weekly maximum rate at Kelowna Airport will be set at $42. If council approves the changes, the new fees will take effect on April 15. There are about 600 short-term parking spaces, and 2,200 long-term stalls.
