Editor and Star reporter clash on wisdom of tax increase.

Don Quixote Note:
Contrast the two looks at the budget by our local Newspaper. Obviously the Editorial staff and their star reporter are not reading from the same page. I am glad to see that reporters are not swayed by their editorial overlords although I could almost think that the original Editorial was crafted by the same pen. But I must be wrong as no one could change their mind in this manner in less than a week? (Full articles can be read at links provided)

EDITORIAL Tax increase hard to swallow Published: February 24, 2009 7:00 PM

Sure the tax hike is only 1.99 per cent or $20 more (for the average homeowner), but when you consider that Vernon residents have been faced year after year with increases, it adds up. If you live in the Okanagan Landing, that price jumps another $80 more for the integration of fire taxation.

We think, like the two councillors who voted against the budget hike, that a more appropriate outcome would've been no increase in taxes this year. Maybe it's worth another look before first reading.

A taxing situation Published: March 03, 2009 7:00 PM Richard Rolke - Vernon Morning Star

-some politicians continue to claim Vernon council is hitting residents too hard with a 1.99 tax increase or an extra $19.75 a year for the average assessed home-

For those politicians who aren’t satisfied with the 1.99 per cent and insist it could be chopped further, one has to wonder if they are truly interested in the bottom line for citizens or just trying to make some political points.

The old Axiom in the Newspaper business was always, "When in doubt leave it out". Seems the MorningStar did not heed this standard.
