Kelowna Tolko plant curtailments

by Castanet Staff -Mar 6, 2009 / 10:53 am

The recession has finally caught up to the Tolko plant in Kelowna. Tolko says that it will be forced to shut down its veneer plant for a week beginning Monday. That doesn't include the mill. The company's Regional Manager, Jim Baskerville, says there's an oversupply of veneer because of the Tolko plant shut down in Armstrong, which has since resumed operations. The veneer from Kelowna is shipped to Armstrong. Up until now, the Kelowna plant has managed to escape the layoffs that have plagued the B.C. lumber industry, mainly because of a $13 million investment in technology upgrades. Tolko was also forced to curtail work at its Lavington plant. That plant resumes operations Monday, but Tolko says it will be operating on a week-to-week basis.
