Half a million for sidewalks

Castanet Staff - Apr 13, 2009

A half million dollars will pay for a lot of sidewalk. Federal and provincial LocalMotion funding has been announced for the City of Vernon. The funding, totalling $533,000, will be used for the community’s 2009 Transportation Demand Management Initiatives project, which includes the installation of sidewalks, a trail and improvements to lake access.

The project will include:
  • Sidewalks expansions near four schools and three seniors’ centres for a total of 1.2 kilometres
  • Lakeshore Road pedestrian access and lake access improvements
  • Another 400 metres of sidewalk and a retaining wall, including steps to access the beach
  • 2.8 kilometres of multi-use trail from Commonage Road to Okanagan Avenue.
“Our government is investing in Vernon’s infrastructure when it is most needed,” says Okanagan-Vernon MLA Tom Christensen. “This funding supports local jobs and our efforts to make the city more pedestrian friendly.” The LocalMotion project is part of an overall $14-billion capital infrastructure program supported by the Province that will create up to 88,000 jobs and help build public infrastructure in every region of B.C.
