Kelly Hayes - Apr 2, 2009 CASTANET:
A North-Okanagan man has made BC's top 10 list of most wanted car thieves. His name is Devon Jonah Sims. The 25-year-old's mugshot was on the front cover of Thursday's Province newspaper along with nine other most wanted. "Mr. Sims was known to live in the Lumby area. He is currently wanted on provincial-wide warrants for theft under $5,000 and breach of probation," says Vernon RCMP spokesman, Gord Molendyk. "He should be considered violent if he's confronted based on his previous interaction with the police." The release of the top 10 most wanted car thieves was in conjunction with a couple of high tech announcements as part of Auto Crime Enforcement Month. For beginners, the provincial government announced that all Bait Cars will be equipment with live cameras so authorities have a better idea of who they're dealing with when the pull the vehicle over. Since the introduction of the Bait Car program four years ago, vehicle thefts across B.C. have dropped by roughly half and ICBC has seen a $40 million drop in claims.
Also this week, the government announced that it's installing more than 300 cameras in police vehicles at a cost of nearly $2 million. "We've all seen on TV the kind of footage these cameras gather: impaired drivers falling out of their vehicles, trying to flee on foot or even assaulting police officers who've just pulled them over," says Solicitor General John van Dongen "This footage is irrefutable, puts judges at the scene of a crime, saves police paperwork and court time, and leads to more guilty pleas and convictions."
