Vernon Firefighter Brian Parsons underwent heart transplant surgery on February 22, 2008. His recovery and return to full firefighting duties is nothing short of remarkable. The International Association of Firefighters indicates that Brian is only the second career firefighter in North America to come back to front line firefighting duties following a heart transplant.Firefighter Parsons was required to complete a physical fitness test designed by York University to evaluate firefighters abilities to deal with the physical stresses and demands of firefighting. Brian's test results are considered to be outstanding to the amazement of his cardiologist and other medical officials caring for Brian.
On 27 April, during the City Council meeting, (1:30pm) Acting Mayor Patrick Nicol will present Firefighter Parson's with his firefighter helmet as recognition and celebration of his incredible recovery and tenacity.Interviews/photo opportunities will be available at the Vernon Fire Station on 27 April at 12:45 pm and in Council Chambers at1:30pm.
