School Budget Delay

Glen Morrison Wednesday, 22 April 2009 107.5 KISSFM:

The Vernon School District will not be holding a budget approval meeting next Tuesday as previously announced. Board chair Bill Turanski says the board decided to revisit some of the reduction proposals at Tuesday's regular meeting. "We want to take another look at some of the budget reduction items that we have." Turanski says as yet they've not picked a new date, adding it'll depend on how quickly they can deal with the reconsiderations. The district has to chop $2.7 million in order to submit a balanced budget to Victoria. Among other things the board's looking at as many as 20 teacher layoffs, extending spring break to two weeks, making kindergarten a fall day rather than half days but alternating, and $1.4 million in cuts to school based services. Turanski says the kindergarten issue's drawn the most negative response to date. "The concern is some (parents) feel they're not ready for full day kindergarten, and they would prefer to keep the half day." The suggested reductions came after public input was gathered.
