Snowboarders rescued -- no charge

Kelly Hayes - Apr 1, 2009 CASTANET

Vernon Search and Rescue was called into action after two Silver Star snowboarders went out of bounds. The two 17-year-old males were reported missing late Tuesday afternoon. "The RCMP were able to get their helicopter up. We also worked in conjunction with Silver Star ski patrol who came down from the top and follow their tracks while we approached from the bottom," says Vernon SAR's, Leigh Pearson. "We've been there before and when skiers come out, they end up on Trinity Valley Road near Lumby." In addition to the RCMP helicopter, more than two dozen search and rescue officials were called out. Pearson admits search and rescue operations are expensive but rules out charging people who go out of bounds. "Stats show that all search and rescue activities for the entire province, for a full year, cost taxpayers about 14 cents. So, I figure people can spend 14 cents to save someone's life and not care about the money." Pearson says the two snowboarders are from the Edmonton area.
