Police in West Kelowna will have soon have a new place to call home. Tuesday, West Kelowna Council awarded a contract worth slightly more than $6.6 million to Maple Reinders for the construction of the new RCMP Detachment on Pamela Road. The bid by Maple Reinders was the lowest of eight received by the municipality. The entire cost of building will come in at about $8.4 million. The price tag for the 16,000 square foot detachment had risen dramatically over the past couple of years, jumping from an estimated $8.2 million to more than $9.4 million. In November 2008, West Kelowna Council decided to wait and re-tender the project in hopes of saving the tax payers some money. Tuesday, those savings came in at about $1 million. "We've saved about $1 million. With the other costs we've identified, including the architect Omicron, utility issues, DCCs, insurance, site preparation and LED certification, the capital cost is pegged at about $8.4 million," says Mayor Doug Findlater. He says construction is expected to begin the first couple of weeks of June with completion in early summer of 2010.
