Pesticide bylaw reminder (KELOWNA)

May 18 CASTANET:

The City of Kelowna is reminding homeowners to keep their lawns and flower beds healthy and free of pesticide. The pesticide bylaw came into effect January 1, 2009. “Our residents urged that this bylaw be put in place for the health of the community,” says Environmental Technician Michelle Kam. “We want to make sure everyone is aware of the new regulations and help residents learn how to create healthy lawns and yards without using pesticides.” The bylaw regulates maintenance of trees, shrubs, flowers, lawns and hard surfaces such as driveways. “We’re encouraging everyone to read the label before they buy,” says Kam. “Weed and feed products are restricted under the bylaw.”

Active ingredients not allowed under the bylaw include 2, 4-D, carbaryl, diacamba, glyphosate, malathion and mecoprop.

City information booths will be set up at a number of upcoming community events, including the Kelowna’s Farmer’s market. Staff will be on hand to answer questions and provide tips for growing a healthy lawn. Bylaw offences are subject to fines.
