Property crimes have decreased by about 25% in the North Okanagan over the last year, but assaults are up nearly 40%. Superintendent Steve McVarnock, released the First Quarter Policing Report Monday, which shows areas of decrease and increase in different criminal categories, such as property crimes, downtown activities, drug enforcement and crimes against persons. The statistics are based on year-to-date figures gathered since this time last year.
The year-to-date numbers are as follows:
CRIMES AGAINST PERSONS:
- Robberies – 21% decrease
- Assaults – 38% increase
- Domestic assaults with violence – 29% increase
- Domestic assaults without violence – 6% decrease
- Sex offences and homicides – no changes from last year's numbers.
- Possession charges – 40% decrease
- PPT charges – 22% decrease
- Search warrants – 67% decrease.
- Break and Enters – 28% decrease
- Thefts under $5,000 – 24% decrease
- Thefts over $5,000 – 33% decrease
- Theft of motor vehicles - 19% decrease.
- Mischief – 12% decrease
- Theft under $5,000 – 35% decrease
- Break and Enters – 41% decrease
- Persons offenses – 7% increase
- Drug offences – 62% decrease.
- Calls for service – 17% decrease
- Warrants of committal – 133% increase
- Number of inter-agency meetings – 500% increase.
- Impaired charges – 64% increase
- 24-hour suspensions – 3% increase
- MVIs – 53% decrease
- Fatalities – no change.
