Meet EI, stimulus conditions or face defeat, Ignatieff tells PM

CBC NEWS:
Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff listed a series of conditions on Monday that he said Prime Minister Stephen Harper must meet to avoid the Liberals toppling the minority Conservative government and triggering a summer election. Ignatieff told a press conference that he doesn't want an election, but feels he must hold the government accountable after the Tories released their economic progress report last week. He called on Prime Minister Stephen Harper to reveal his government's plan for improving the employment insurance system before the House of Commons rises for a three-month summer break. Ignatieff also demanded more information about stimulus spending and the ballooning deficit — as well as action on the medical isotope shortage. "We need the prime minister to deliver the accountability that Canadians expect from their government," he said. “The government’s answers in this report just aren’t good enough. The government’s performance in Parliament just isn’t good enough.”

The earliest opposition parties could defeat the Tories in the House of Commons is Friday, as MPs vote on the latest round of spending estimates in support of the government's economic recovery plan. The NDP and Bloc Québécois have already said that they will reject the economic report.
