Police Probe Fish Case

Peter McIntyre Monday, 08 June 2009 107.5 KISSFM:

RCMP are investigating how they handled a Vernon murder suspect, but a victim's relative doesn't expect much to come out of it. Jerry Drake's dad Jeffrey was killed in 2004 just days after Eric Fish killed senior Bill Abramenko. Drake's complaint about the RCMP's lack of community warning about Fish, who was on parole for a previous murder, has led to a police probe which started last month. Drake tels KISS FM, "I think the conclusion is already written for them. It's completely wrong that the police should be investigating themselves under such matters. It's the same as a criminal judging themselves and sentencing themselves. It's absurd."

Drake believes Fish killed his father and says his father would be alive today if the RCMP had done their job correctly. Fish went missing from his halfway house before killing Abramenko. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison last year for that murder. A murder charge against Fish in Drake's death was dropped by the Crown in January 2008, due to a lack of evidence. Vernon RCMP spokesman Gord Molendyk says police have set up an appointment with Drake to go over the conclusions with him, but he's not sure of the date for that.
