Ron Seymour 2009-06-22 Kelowna Daily Courier:
Total pay for Central Okanagan regional district politicians went down 12 per cent last year, according to newly released financial information. Leading the downward way in pay was chairman Robert Hobson, who earned $41,210 in 2008, compared to $41,540 in 2007. Collectively, the board members and their designated alternates earned $217,64 last year, down from $247,844 in 2007. The directors‘ pay averaged about $16,000. The chief reason for the drop in pay relates to the incorporation of the new District Municipality of West Kelowna, which has assumed many governance functions formerly overseen by the regional district. As a result, the number of regional district employees who earned more than $75,000 dropped from 25 in 2007 to 17 last year. Top earner was former director of engineering Hilary Hettinga, who was paid $172,000. In 2007, Wayne d‘Easum, then chief administrative officer, was paid $261,000. He retired part way through 2008, so his salary last year was $168,000. Total staffing costs for the regional district fell from $11.3 million to $9.1 million. In 2007, the regional district did $27.4 million worth of business with suppliers of goods and services, but the comparable figure for last year was $18.6 million. By provincial law, all municipalities must publish the names and salaries of employees who earn more than $75,000 annually before the end of June. The City of Kelowna is to publish its list this week.
