Three tickets equals towed vehicle

Kevin Berar - Giant FM - Jun 16, 2009 CASTANET:
When you get three or more parking tickets in the Peach City, your vehicle will be towed. That motion was passed at Penticton City Council Monday after Councillor Mike Pearce brought it forward. Councillor Andrew Jakubite supported it. “If you're a chronic abuser, you'll get towed and you'll probably only need to get towed once because the issue about collecting from towing is the same as collecting from tickets. It's the same argument, but now that you have your car impounded, you are more likely to pay your fine to get it back because you need you vehicle. With a ticket, there's no real incentive to come after that person,” says Jakubite. Penticton Mayor Dan Ashton was not a fan of this new motion. “I think it's a bit dramatic. I understand these people have not lived up to their obligations from acquiring a ticket but this is still Penticton, we are still a tourist situation,” says Ashton. He says another possible solution would be to boot offending vehicles. “You know the boot has proved to be a very effective method in Europe for those who overstay their parking or have additional tickets.” The Director of Development and Engineering, Mitch Moroziuk, says there's a couple of problems the City will face with booting. “We don't have any vehicles to carry around the boots, and we'd have the issue of how we are going to deal with taking them off on weekends, ect.,” says Moroziuk.
