Tumbler Ridge - One Dead After Residential Explosion

2009-06-01 09:32 PDT RCMP News Release:

At approximately 2:30 AM on Sunday May 31, 2009, a large explosion occurred in a residential area along the first hundred block of Wolverine Avenue in Tumbler Ridge, BC. RCMP and the Tumbler Ridge Fire Department responded to the area immediately and found one home had been completely destroyed and two others severely damaged. Both hydro and natural gas to the area were disconnected to aid in the firefighting efforts. The Rocky Mountain Rangers were also called in to assist.

As a result of the explosion, one person has been confirmed deceased, but no others are believed to have suffered serious injuries. The name of the deceased is not being released at this time.

In all, twenty-six homes have been damaged due to this blast. The debris field is extensive and covers the neighbourhood. All residents affected by the blast have been given access to local victim and emergency services and are being accommodated by relatives and friends.

All indications at this time, are that a natural gas line had been tampered with. This is believed to be an isolated incident and there is no reason to believe any other members of the public are in danger. The BC Coroner's Service and RCMP continue to investigate this tragic event.
