Wednesday December 2nd Realtors Food Bank Drive

The event that will stock the shelves of the Vernon Salvation Army Food Bank, takes place next week. Local Realtors will be going door to door in Greater Vernon Wednesday to collect non perishable food items for their 32-nd annual food drive.13 tons of food were collected last year.

Realtors in Enderby Armstrong and Lumby will also be out collecting their for their food banks the same night.

People can also still get a free lift ticket to Silver Star by donating 20 dollars to the Vernon Salvation Army food bank or the equivalent in food. Dave McBain from the Salvation Army says that promotion has been a big success, raising $5,000 in cash and $2,000 in food, so far. He says people can make donations at Friday's Christmas Light Up event in downtown Vernon.

Olympic Torch Relay B.C. Police extra Costs (Running list updated from print media reports)

Saanich News: Nov. 18:The Olympic torch relay that passed through Greater Victoria on Oct. 30 cost Saanich police $22,500 in one-day costs. That figure accounts mainly for overtime costs by officers, said Sgt. Julie Fast, but doesn’t include the cost of regularly-scheduled officers on that day.

Victoria police tallied approximately $141,000 in overtime on the day. Their total includes pre-planning, training, equipment and torch-related post-event costs. Those outside costs extracted, the day cost $80,000, said Sgt. Grant Hamilton with Victoria police.

Neither figure includes the $60,000 the department spent on a backup radio system, used for the day to ease the burden on the problem-plagued CREST radio system.

Nanaimo RCMP Insp. Al O'Donnell said the detachment exercised "extraordinarily tight security," with as many as 70 officers dedicated to the torch relay as it passed through the community, costing the department about $30,000 in overtime.

Mission seeks support
The first step is the Fill A Pack, Fill A Heart campaign. Residents are being asked to fill a backpack with items that the homeless can make use of. The items include deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrush, comb, Kleenex, pens, note pad, socks, hand warmers, candy or gum, razors, soap and face cloth and a small hand mirror.Harper said while the items are small in size, they can have a significant impact in someone’s life. Residents are asked to drop off filled backpacks at the mission (3403 27th Ave.) by Dec. 15.
