Peter McIntyre Wednesday, 12 August 2009 10:21 17.5 KISSFM:
A rise in assault cases is one concern for Vernon's interim RCMP boss.Inspector Reg Burgess said in his quarterly report to city council, both common and domestic assaults are up.Burgess tells KISS FM, "Domestic assaults have increased 32 percent (over last year at same time). Overall assaults are up 24 percent which indicates a higher percentage on the domestic side than a typical bar fight or that type of event."Burgess says assault cases generally take more time for officers to investigate and can be quite "draining."
Meantime, Burgess, who's been on the job for eight weeks, has applied for the Vernon Superintendent's position formerly held by Steve McVarnock."I would love to be here as Superintendent. I've been here eight weeks, enough to know it's a place I'd love to work."Burgess is not sure when the decision will be made, saying the job is being posted nationally. The Superintendent's position has been vacant since McVarnock left for a new position in Nunavut in June.
