Everything old is new again

Salmon Arm Observer Editorial Sept 8:

When you are in politics, you can’t pass up any way of getting mileage with voters, even if it means taking credit for the same project once, twice, even three times. The Shuswap was the latest target of some political dog-and-pony shows as Okanagan-Shuswap MP Colin Mayes trotted around dispensing money for projects that have already been completed — and which have already made the rounds in the press months ago. This includes upgrades to the roof of the Sicamous Recreation Centre and for bleachers and washroom improvements to the Sunwave Centre. So a few dignitaries get trotted out and the PR reps make a barrage of phone calls to the media hinting that the “new” announcement is a really big deal, but refusing to divulge the secret. The moment better be captured in print, so they will have something for their clipping files or election campaign literature.

Exactly who benefitted from the staged “announcement” of funding for a series of projects that are already in place? The whole thing seems like a waste of time, speeches, cookies and coffee — especially when there are much more significant issues facing our region. Apparently it’s more important for politicians to look like they are doing something... even if it is the same something over and over again.

There he is, the invisible MP. Ballyhooing stuff he's already distributed cheques for.

During the last election at an all-candidates forum in Armstrong, somebody asked him what he intended to do for his constituents, should he be re-elected. If this had been his answer maybe he would have got his walking papers.

When the wheels come off Stevie's little game, are we gonna fall for this BS again? Yup. Wait and see.
