Family Homeless After Fire

BellaVistaFire

A family of six is homeless after a fire ripped through their house in Vernon's Bella Vista area this morning. The blaze broke out in one of the 14 units at the Blue Skies Housing Co-op around 10:30, and when it was out, the house was completely gutted. The mother and father were at work, while their four children were at school.

Pastor Steve Boismier from the nearby Church of God, saw it break out."I just noticed a bit of smoke coming out the back door so I just watched for a second and I could hear some breaking glass and got on the phone and called the fire department. It was a matter of five minutes, maybe three minutes before it was totally engulfed."Co-op founding member Pauline Boone says the building was insured, but not the contents."As far as the Co-op goes, we're okay but it's our member now we're worried about because they have no content insurance and four children. They've been here about seven years."The family's pet dog may have perished in the fire.

Members of the Okanagan Landing and Vernon fire departments kept it from spreading to the adjoining homes.Vernon deputy fire chief Lawrie Skulrood says the cause is under investigation. The Church of God on Bella Vista Road is accepting donations of food, clothing, furniture or money for the burned out family which included the mom and dad and three boys aged 10, 12 and 16, and a 14 year old girl.
