Peter McIntyre Friday, 04 September 2009 11:21 107.5 KISSFM:

Several recreational facilities in Greater Vernon will be getting upgrades after funding announcements from the federal and local governments.$540,000 dollars will be spent on six projects including replacing the playground equipment at Paddlewheel Park, installing new flooring at the Aquatic Centre, and adding lights for the outdoor tennis court at Marshall Park, which got the biggest cheer at today's announcement from several tennis players on hand.

NORD facilities manager Jim Bailey says a timeline has been set for the various projects."We have a deadline of April 2010 to have all of the projects completed."He says they'll be able to do the work with in house staff but they will be issuing several tenders to contractors to do parts of the projects

Two thirds of the funding comes from the regional district with the rest from the federal government. ($179,665 from Recreational Infrastructure Canada)

M-P Colin Mayes says it's rewarding to be a part of worthwhile projects. He tells KISS FM, "It is, and you know I'm just bringing taxpayer's money back to the community, but I just have to applaud all the people who get involved in these projects."

The other projects are replacing the siding, carpet and downstairs ceiling of the Vernon Boys and Girls Club, replacing the floor and installing a motorized curtain divider in the Priest Valley Gym, air conditioning at the Dogwood Gym.The Vernon Tennis Associaiton ($2,500) and Funtastic ($14,000) are also contributing funds to the projects.
