Parks on the agenda during GVAC meeting

Richard Rolke - Vernon Morning Star Published: September 10, 2009 6:00 PM

A meeting about Greater Vernon parks is going ahead but some officials are questioning the need. The Greater Vernon Advisory Committee will hold a special session at 8 a.m. today to discuss classification of parks, parks maintenance standards, ownership and control of the facilities and governance.

But Vernon representatives have suggested the issues should be part of a formal service review.“We can sit and discuss things until we’re blue in the face but unless it’s under some formality, we won’t solve anything,” said director Mary-Jo O’Keefe. “If we make decisions without the proper information, we will have to reverse decisions.”

But Coldstream director Doug Dirk says the goal of the meeting is to only clarify some concerns and not to restructure the function.“We need to identify some of the concerns and see if we can resolve them within the existing structure,” he said.Support for the meeting also came from Gyula Kiss, Coldstream director.“We are receiving complaints from our residents about parks and we need to discuss them,” he said.

The last formal service review was in 1993 and they are supposed to be done every three to four years.“In business, you do it on a regular basis,” said Wayne Lippert, GVAC chairman.Plans for a new service review were initiated in 2007.While he has agreed to today’s meeting, Lippert isn’t sure it’s necessary if there’s a service review. “I look at it as covering all of the same ground twice,” said Lippert.

Mary-Joe. Sorta like the decision to change the menu in the Multiplex. Anybody think, or bother to ask the patrons of the hockey games what they might think about this.
I can only imagine what this decision will do to concession revenues. Probably have to lay off staff too.
And yes, you are going to look really bad when you finally decide to reverse this and get your noses out of the publics business and back to where it belongs.

You should actually come and see the poop dog park that you created along lakeshore Road, dogs pooping and people not picking up. and the beaches arent even clean.
and you have people there doing whatever they want. and one has a houseboat sitting in front of a prefectly good view.
