A major drug sting in Kamloops almost ended with a bang after four teens produced a shotgun and attempted to rob an undercover narcotics officer. The two-month police operation ended last week with police recommending 50 drug-trafficking charges, said RCMP Sgt. Scott Wilson.Street-level dealers were targeted during the operation, and officers made buys from 43 individuals, including known gang associates, nine females and seven prolific offenders, police said.More than 3,100 ecstasy pills were bought, along with cocaine in gram-bags and multiple-ounce bags.
The operation reached maximum intensity Thursday as an undercover officer posing as a drug dealer attempted to make a transaction with four teens.According to reports, the undercover team arranged to meet the teens on the outskirts of the city. During the encounter, the teens produced a sawed-off shotgun in a heist attempt. Police were able to seize the gun along with drugs and about $4,000 in cash.Kamloops Insp. Yves Lacasse would not provide details, but indicated the undercover team made four arrests without injury. When the team called in the dangerous incident, Lacasse said, he felt sick to his stomach."When I got the call, it was very, very, very frightening," he told the Kamloops Daily News.Charged with robbery and use of a firearm to commit robbery in connection with the alleged incident are three males, aged 19, 18 and 17, and an 18-year-old female. The RCMP expects additional charges, according to Wilson. The teens were remanded in custody and are to appear in court Friday.
