Vernon home damaged by fire

A North Okanagan family of three is out of their home following a fire. The fire broke out in the basement of a home on 16th Street in Vernon just before 10:30 a.m. Sunday. Fire Chief Rick Owen says the fire started in the basement. “The people in the home heard a loud bang. One person went downstairs, saw the fire and they all evacuated. There were three residents of the home and three people who were visiting at the time. They all got out without injury,” says Owen. He says when crews arrived they saw smoke coming from the home's upper storey. “There was visible smoke and fire. The fire had breached the doors inside the house. I estimate the damage done is about $200,000.” Owen says the cause of the fire is being investigated but it may have been electrical.
