Council Briefs

Vernon city council gets back to work today with their first regular meeting in a month due to the recent municipalities convention. The elected reps will have to decide if the Teen Junction will get a city grant. The finance committee has recommended 30-thousand dollars for the group that helps at-risk youth. Mayor Wayne Lippert has suggested the grant be contingent on if the Junction gets provincial funding.

Council will also hear the other side of the pesticide debate at their meeting today. A group of four stakeholders will make their case for allowing the chemicals using what they call "best management practices." The group includes pesticide retailer Dave Weatherill, farmer Sid Sidhu and research specialist Mario Lanthier . The city is looking at a bylaw to ban cosmetic pesticide use on public land starting next year, and on private land by 2012.
