E-books flying off shelves

Published: October 08, 2009 6:00 PM Morning Star:

Nine months into 2009, residents have downloaded almost twice as many audiobooks and e-books from the Okanagan Regional Library website than in 2008. By Sept. 30, there were 7,094 items downloaded, a near 80 per cent increase over the 2008 year-to-date total of 3,952.“This statistic is indicative of the evolution of library services, and that many people are enjoying literature and information in other formats than traditional paper,” said Lesley Dieno, executive director. ORL added downloadable audiobook and e-book options to its options in 2007 through a provincewide library partnership called Library to Go. ORL cardholders are able to access the service by clicking on the e-resources or new audiobook downloads link on the home page (www.orl.bc.ca).

There are MP3 and iPod-compatible audiobooks that can be downloaded and listened to, while e-books can be downloaded to read on a computer screen or mobile device. Other services that have also been recently added to the ORL include a collection of feature film DVDs available for loan, free wireless access available in branches, and online book clubs that boast 2,556 members throughout the ORL region.

So why do they keep trying to get larger library buildings such as in Vernon-ie double the size? Obviously-empire building and to hell with the taxpayer.
