A 'no gang colours' dress code has been implemented for Greater Vernon's recreation venues including Wesbild Centre and the Rec Complex. It's covers all events but Recreation Services Manager Doug Ross says it will be tested out at a Mixed Martial Arts event this weekend."We haven't had an incident yet and we'd like to keep it that way, so it's just something we've been discussing with the RCMP probably for over a year."Violators will be asked to remove any clothing, patches or emblems associated with a gang, and if they don't they can be removed from the building.
RCMP spokesman Gord Molendyk (pictured) says the presence of somebody wearing gang colours can be intimidating and unsettling for some people."The no gang colours dress code is being adopted in consideration of the rights and feelings of all the public." Molendyk says other municipalities have similar codes in place and the city of Vernon is considering a bylaw.Ross says, "We're just trying to make all members of the community aware that this is in place so that there's no surprises when someone shows up at the doors at one of our venues."RCMP and security guards will be on hand for this Saturday's event at the Rec Centre and for another Mixed Martial Event in November at Wesbild Centre.
