Kamloops is a national Communities In Bloom (CIB) champion — yet again. The Tournament Capital took home the title at the awards ceremony in Vaughn, Ont., on Saturday, besting four other entries in the category of communities with a population of between 55,001 and 150,000, including Lethbridge, Alta., Wood Buffalo, Alta., Kawartha Lakes, Ont., Chatham-Kent, Ont. and Sarnia, Ont.Kamloops won a national CIB title in 2004 and an international championship in 2006.
In July and August, qualified volunteer CIB judges visited Kamloops and other communities and evaluated each one on its overall performance in the following areas: Tidiness, environmental awareness, community involvement, heritage conservation, urban forestry, landscaped areas, floral displays, and turf and groundcovers.Communities in Bloom is a Canadian non-profit organization committed to fostering civic pride, environmental responsibility and beautification through community involvement and the challenge of a national program.Celebrating its 15 edition in 2009, the Communities in Bloom program is dedicated to promoting the value of plants, trees and green spaces in urban settings, and encourages Canadian communities of all sizes to improve quality of life through community engagement and sustainable development.
