Public Checks Out Highway Design

The plan to four lane the highway through Lake Country is moving along, but it will be a while before motorists will be able to use it.An open house to show the designs was held last night in Oyama.Jeff Knight from the Transportation Ministry says the 78 million project could go to tender next spring, with completion in late 2012."This replaces the last two lane section of Highway 97 between Vernon and Westbank and it will have controlled highway access that will improve safety because it will limit the conflict points along the highway."Knight says property acquisitions continue in the area so the road can be located west of the current highway, over the mountain side. Land is being purchased from 30 property owners.

The new section will start at the intersection of Gatske and Evans roads north of Oyama, and come out near Oceola Road in Winfield.Up to 20,000 vehicles a day use the the current nine kilometre two lane section, which has been the site of numerous crashes including several fatals. The existing highway along Wood Lake will be converted into a local road.Bob Pratt, the Ministry's property acquisition coordinator told the Kelowna Courier, there have been no protests from land owners who will be getting fair market value for their property.
