Provincial funds could flow into a youth centre after all.Mayor Wayne Lippert says a recent meeting with provincial officials about the Teen Junction Youth Centre and the Junction Literacy Centre was positive. “It definitely sounds like they will get their funding,” said Lippert.Teen Junction has been concerned that provincial funding will be limited because of belt-tightening in Victoria. Without assistance, the centre could close Oct. 31.Many of the youth who access the facility come from broken homes, are on probation, live in poverty, are victims of abuse, have quit school and fight drug addictions. Among the services provided at Teen Junction are computer access, referrals to other agencies, life skills workshops, recreational activities, a youth kitchen, a youth garden and an education advocate.

Recently, the city’s finance committee recommended that council provide $30,000 to Teen Junction so it can continue with its services. Lippert, though, believes that recommendation could be shelved if the provincial government steps forward. “There is a general feeling that money is tight and it needs to go where it is needed,” he said, adding that there is pressure from other groups for help .“If they are going to get it (provincial money), they don’t need the $30,000.”

Lippert also fears that a city grant could force the provincial government to back away from Teen Junction.“If we double up on money this year, the province may reconsider its support next time,” he said. But Teen Junction executive director Debbie Schiller is urging council to support local youth.“The grant from the city is important so we can see the year through,” she said. The society has applied to B.C. Gaming for $100,000, but the most it has ever received is $50,000 for both the youth centre and literacy initiatives.“We are hoping for the best but neither amount will keep us open year-round,” said Schiller.Schiller has confirmed with B.C. Gaming that the application has been received and the request is being considered.
