Greater Vernon residents are being asked to share the holiday spirit with those less-fortunate. The Upper Room Mission is seeking community support for a Christmas dinner and gifts that will be handed out to the homeless and the working poor. “We want to pull out all stops and make this the best Christmas ever for them,” said Chuck Harper, executive director. “We want to show them the true meaning of Christmas.”
The first step is the Fill A Pack, Fill A Heart campaign. Residents are being asked to fill a backpack with items that the homeless can make use of.The items include deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrush, comb, Kleenex, pens, note pad, socks, hand warmers, candy or gum, razors, soap and face cloth and a small hand mirror.Harper said while the items are small in size, they can have a significant impact in someone’s life.
Residents are asked to drop off filled backpacks at the mission (3403 27th Ave.) by Dec. 15. Planning is also underway for a large dinner Dec. 25. “We need all of the fixings,” said Harper of turkey, vegetables and special holiday treats. The public can assist either by donating the food directly or providing money so the mission can purchase the required items. While it’s not known how many people will participate in the dinner, help behind the scenes will be needed. “If people want to volunteer to serve food or sing Christmas carols, they should contact us,” said Harper.
