PRESS RELEASE December 19, 2009
LUMBY - While the world pressures leaders to reach consensus on addressing global warming, Colin Mayes, Conservative MP in the BC riding of Okanagan-Shuswap claims only "a few scientists" believe CO2 causes global warming and that the cause has yet to be substantiated. In an email sent to a constituent earlier this week, Colin Mayes admits not knowing the cause of global warming and states that temperatures are now cooling and the ice caps are rebuilding.
"To be represented by a man who has so little understanding of science is scary" says Huguette Allen, Green Party MP candidate in Okanagan Shuswap. "We live in a world where complexity is the norm. Mr. Mayes has often uttered statements that prove an anti-science bias. Can someone who has an anti-science bias take wise decisions? One wonders what guides his thinking." Although the Harper government has not publicly supported Mayes' statements, Canada's inaction and stance in Copenhagen seem to indicate the same lack of respect for and understanding of science. "While climate scientists tell us emissions must steeply decline by no later than 2015, Canada seems willing to continue on increasing emissions until we are past the point of no return" continues Allen.
Allen has now issued a challenge to Mayes, asking him to attend a debate with her on the science of climate change, saying : "This lack of knowledge is much too important to let it go on. I want to ensure he understands the science so he can properly represent his constituents on this crucial issue and pressure government to reduce emissions quickly and decisively." She has offered to meet with him publicly anytime after December 29th and will inform media and the population as soon as an answer is received.

This "debate" could be a very interesting event. I'm confident that neither one of them knows much of anything about global warming.
I think half the carbon dioxide we have in the atmosphere is from Huguette....
Colin Mayes remarks in the emails are absurd. Suprisingly many people think that the ice caps are rebuilding. Maybe at Tim Horton's. Although satelite images show that there is some growth. The fact is that it is superficial skinning. This last summer scientists assessing the ice were horrified to discover that the polar ice they investigated which used to be about 30 feet thick is now only 3 feet thick. As the ice breaker easily pushed on deeper and deeper into new sailing teritory. These scientists sorowfully realized that again the ice sheet is suffering far beyond their worst expectations.
We sure do need a big loud debate to show people of this riding just how profoundly incompetent Mr. Mayes truly is.
P.S. Nice artwork.
Is anyone really surprised by Mayes comments? He's towing the party line and I'm sure truly doesn't believe that human caused climate change is occurring. I cannot understand why voters in this region continue to vote for this douche.
Not only does poor Colin fail in science, he can't do arithmetic. Scientists contributing to the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, that recently won the Nobel Prize & that links human generated Green house gases like CO2 to climate change, number in the tousands from all over the world. These are just the climate scientists. Many more from other disiplines in most universities around the world agree humans burning fossil fuels are accellerating climate change. There are a few who claim to disaggree but most of them are connected to the oil industry.
Poor Colin only has to go to Rogers Pass to see retreating glaciers. Anyone who denies leading, peer reviewed science & calls a Nobel prize winner a fool, better have his credentials. Let's see your facts, Colin. We need a local forum on the science of climate change.
We are all guilty of wishful thinking from time to time and with seasonal charity maybe we could forgive Mr. Mayes a bit of skepticism in the interests of furthering Hope, but he is an experienced politician and is supposed therefore to be well versed in that arena at least.
It is disconcerting to discover that he does not even know his own party's policy and declared views on climate change.
We live far from Ottawa but surely Mr. Mayes has a television or a telephone or can at least read his party's memos?
This is no way to solicit my vote come the next election.
I wrote the following letter and sent it to the national tv network. I doubt they will pay any attention but who knows?
Quote:
Dear Sir,
This morning you ran stories covering the Copenhagen Climate Change conference and almost every
day you feature some story about reducing greenhouse gases and/ or Copenhagen.
Then you have that loon of a weather man promoting a Christmas lights display contest.
Either your editorial staff lacks any comprehension of the connection between light
displays and energy usage, or you think it isn't important, or you simply think we, your
audience, are too stupid to notice, in any case you have lost all credibility regarding
the issue.
Today's winner of the "get your light display on national TV" contest was from Red Deer,
Alberta - a province that produces 90% of its electricity by BURNING COAL!
The house had 65,000 lights on it.
Give your heads a shake will you?
