Public Safety Minister Peter Van Loan got seal-skin booties for his four-month-old boy, while Liberal MP Shawn Murphy licked his fingers after eating smoked seal on a baguette. Overall, more than 100 people converged on Parliament Hill this morning at an event in promote the Atlantic seal hunt, organized by the Bloc Québécois and its MP for the Magdalene Islands, Raynald Blais.
In an opening speech, Bloc Leader Gilles Duceppe said that Canada has to fight back against the current ban on seal products in the European Union. He said he hosted a similar event the previous evening for representatives from about 40 embassies in Ottawa, saying that defenders of the seal hunt must be heard. “The government should have done this years ago,” he said. Mr. Duceppe added that he told ambassadors and various embassy officials that there is no outrage in killing animals for human sustenance. “I asked them when was the last time they had eaten a live chicken? Everything that we eat has been killed beforehand,” Mr. Duceppe said.
