A residential care facility in Vernon has given its staff some difficult news just prior to Christmas. The operators of Heritage Square, Kaigo, plan to contract-out care-aides and Licensed Practical Nurses effective next June. BCGEU staff rep Debra Critchley calls it a blatant move to get out of a facilities agreement and bargain lower wages. Critchley says the news has devastated many of the 58 staff, some of which have worked at the facility for 20 years. Managing director Laverne Boye admits it' an emotional issue but says the move was made to ensure long term sustainability.
She says the level of care will not change.
